Lack of Purpose or Meaning
Feeling undervalued, unfulfilled, or disconnected.
Poor Work-Life Balance
Inability to separate work and personal life. Excessive work hours, having to work evenings and weekends, excessive business travel, inadequate leave. Burn out is a real issue.
Limited Career Growth Opportunities
Feeling stagnant, undervalued, or without a clear path for advancement. The best organizations have a talent identification program and offer training and mentoring.
Unhappiness With Management and/or Organization’s Culture
Poor communication, lack of trust in leadership, unsupportive environment, manager’s play favorites, hostile or toxic workplace.
Inadequate Compensation and/or Benefits
Feeling underpaid and undervalued. Seeing new hires being paid the same as you despite your years of experience and solid performance. Benefits don’t match what other organizations in your field and/or geographic area provide.
Unclear Expectations or Conflicting Priorities
Confusion over responsibilities and lack of accountability. Can also be a job with unrealistic performance expectations where “nothing is ever good enough”.
Lack of Autonomy
Micromanagement and overbearing supervision of work. Insufficient freedom to make decisions leads to frustration.
Poor Work Environment
Outdated equipment and furnishings. Job location is undesirable and perhaps even unsafe. Physical environment is poorly designed and uncomfortable.
If you are facing many of these issues take steps to change jobs, the organization, or even make a career change. The first step is to talk with an experienced career coach who can help you ID what you really want out of your work and help you land your ideal job.
