Older workers have a lot to offer and need to demonstrate a willingness to learn and adapt to new technologies.
Older workers have a lot to offer and need to demonstrate a willingness to learn and adapt to new technologies.

Ageism is prevalent and most often misapplied when it comes to hiring. While we can’t change erroneous perceptions of older workers, one can take steps to improve the odds of making a career change or landing a job.

The first step is redefining what career success looks like at this point in your life. Many folks over 55 are focused on finding work that energizes them and that they find meaningful. Not worrying about titles and maximizing compensation is quite liberating and opens up a variety of job opportunities in areas you had never explored before.

During job interviews, highlight your adaptability, convey that you are current with today’s trends - especially technology, and display energy and interest in learning new skills. Regarding technology, it’s relatively easy to gain certifications on line and demonstrate a commitment to continuous learning. This helps to counter age-related stereotypes held by many younger interviewers.

Lastly, seeking a new career can be lonely and frustrating. Get help from a career transition specialist; one with personal experience navigating a career change and broad job search skills who is adept at interview preparation including conducting mock interviews. Having someone in your corner to talk with is a great way to stay positive and focused on landing the job you most want; one with a high Psychic Salary™. After all, a job should be more than a paycheck.
