Choosing the right words and terms for your resume is vital to landing an interview.
Choosing the right words and terms for your resume is vital to landing an interview.

  • Responsible for – Lacks impact. Better: “Manage 7 direct reports”

  • Hardworking – Too subjective

  • Team Player – Overused; no one is going to say they’re not a team player

  • Detail-Oriented – Provide specific examples

  • Results-Driven – List specific results achieved. For example, “Increased gross profit 17.6% in 90 days" with how you did it

  • Motivated – They would expect this from everyone

  • Excellent Communication Skills – Give examples like “Gave PowerPoint presentation to Board”

  • Creative or Innovative – Instead list “Using AI and CRM data mining I uncovered $155k in waste”

  • Objective – Tell them what you can do for them, not what you want

  • References Available on Request – Unnecessary, it’s a given they’ll want them IF they make an offer
