What's Keeping You From Your Dream Job?

Start with the end in mind. Where do you most to be in your career?
Start with the end in mind. Where do you most to be in your career?

Many of my career coaching clients report feeling “stuck” and unable to figure out their next career step should be and how to get started on the right path.

This makes me think of a dialog in Alice in Wonderland by Lewis Carroll:

“One day Alice came to a fork in the road and saw a Cheshire cat in a tree. ‘Which road do I take?’ she asked. ‘Where do you want to go?’ was his response. ‘I don’t know,’ Alice answered. ‘Then,’ said the cat, ‘it doesn’t matter.”

Knowing where you want to end up is vital to creating the plan or roadmap to get you there. So is giving voice to your dream job. Give yourself permission to think big and shut out the negative messages from others and yourself: “That’ll never work”, “Be realistic”, etc.

Start with end in mind as you describe your ideal dream job and answer these questions:

  • What will you be?

  • What will you be doing?

  • With whom?

  • For whom?

  • What will you have?

  • How will you feel?

Caution: Don’t share your goals and plan with anyone you aren’t 100% sure will support you striving for them.
