No matter how large or small a business is, it needs a mission statement. A mission statement defines the organization's business, its objectives and how it will reach them. Individuals also need one. A good way to find your life purpose or mission is to ask yourself:
When I am at my very best, what are the people around me empowered to be like?
We all have moments where we are at our very best, where it seems like what is best about us is flowing through us. We are "in the zone”, we are "on." In those moments, we're usually not thinking at all, we're experiencing life as it was meant to be.
Think about one of these moments in your life and remember how it felt. Now think about this idea: When you are at your best, you have an effect on the people around you. Something opens up for them, because of you. And it's possible that the effect you have on people when you are at your best is your purpose in life.
If that's hard to believe, think of it this way: When we are at our worst, we tend to draw the worst out of the people around us. Some call this The Law of Attraction, a philosophy suggesting that positive thoughts bring positive results into a person's life, while negative thoughts bring negative outcomes. In other words, a positive mindset will attract more success and happiness than a negative one.
When you are at your best, you bring out the best in other people.
If you are looking for your core purpose in life, this is a good place to start, because we all elicit something different in the people around us when we are at our best. For you, that might be the special thing that you have to share. Bringing it to the world might be your purpose. So, ask yourself:
"When I've been at my best, what were the people around me free to be like?"
Here are some examples:
"When I am at my best, I notice that the people around me are free to really accept themselves, even things about themselves they might be ashamed of. My purpose is to create a world where people can live without shame."
"When I am at my best, I notice that the people around me laugh and have a great time. My mission is to create a world where joy and laughter are the norm."
"When I am at my best, I notice that people around me feel empowered to take on the biggest problems in their lives. My mission is to create a world where people feel empowered to take on and solve their biggest problems."
Perhaps the best thing about identifying and owning your purpose and creating a personal mission statement in this way is that it doesn't make life into one big assignment or an unending vista of work. All you need to do is be you when you are being you at your best.
